Power and Connectivity
Builder.Cam takes a simple approach: mains power for reliability, built-in 4G for connectivity. Here's why this matters and what it means for your site.
Mains Power (Required)
Builder.Cam cameras require standard electrical power. This enables reliable 24/7 operation without battery or solar limitations.
- Consistent capture every 5 minutes, all day
- No battery depletion in cold weather
- No panel positioning for solar
- Reliable for multi-year deployments
Built-in 4G/LTE
All cameras include cellular connectivity. No site WiFi required—just power and cellular coverage.
- No network configuration needed
- Works on any site with cellular coverage
- No WiFi credentials or IT involvement
- Reliable even when site internet fails
Mains+4G vs Solar/Battery
| Aspect | Mains + 4G (Builder.Cam) | Solar/Battery |
|---|---|---|
| Setup Complexity | Very simple—plug in power | Complex—positioning, angles, backup |
| Reliability | Continuous operation | Weather-dependent, seasonal issues |
| Cold Weather | Operates normally | Battery capacity reduced, solar limited |
| Capture Frequency | Up to every minute | Often limited to save power |
| Long-Term Cost | Predictable subscription | Battery replacements, maintenance |
| Best For | Most construction sites | Remote sites without power |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't Builder.Cam offer solar-powered cameras?
We focus on reliability. Solar cameras have significant limitations: reduced capture in winter/cloudy conditions, battery degradation in cold, complex installation angles. Most construction sites have power available (even temporary) and benefit from the reliability of mains-powered cameras.
What power connection is needed?
Standard European power outlet (230V). The camera uses a standard power adapter. Temporary construction power (site containers, temporary panels) works fine. Power consumption is minimal—similar to a phone charger.
What if site power goes out?
The camera resumes operation when power returns. There will be a gap in photos during the outage. For sites with frequent power issues, a small UPS can bridge brief outages, though this is rarely necessary.
Do I need to arrange a SIM card?
No. Builder.Cam cameras include integrated 4G connectivity with our SIM included. Data costs are part of the subscription. You just need cellular coverage at the site.
What if cellular coverage is weak?
The camera includes an external antenna connection for areas with weak coverage. In most cases, standard coverage is sufficient. Very remote sites with no cellular coverage may need alternative solutions.
